This song was so overplayed, I took a break from it for a decade or two, but those same emotions of longing still wash over upon hearing the opening riff.
  • Wicked GameChris Isaak - Back to Basics: School of Rock 101 - #5 - 3 points - Probably an offbeat pick for this round deserving of any downvotes, but I just like how the opening riff sets the atmospheric tone for the song. It’s used sparingly throughout, but parallels and complements Chris Issac’s vocals on the chorus beautifully.

He still tries to relay to people the impending end of the world but they ignore him. He gets angry, taking his rage out on the human race, thus bringing about the apocalypse that he foresaw. Transponster: Chandler Bing’s job or the alternative title of this song?

If I remember from high school English class, hubris leads to downfall and I think Chris Martin nicely croons his tale of tragedy within grandiose instrumentals in this four minute song. I bet Apple sold a lot of iPods that year!
  • Right Above ItLil Wayne, Drake - You're So Vain - #8 - 1 points - This is not a genre that I normally listen to, but I thought this would be a more interesting pick than my initial choice of “Big Pimpin.” It was the theme song to “Ballers” with Dwayne Johnson, the HBO show that made me recognize greatness of The Rock.

I think that experience pushes the cover ahead of the original for me (ducks head). Also, that My Gay Uncle version of BTAU was a guilty pleasure of mine that I totally forgot about—thanks for reminding me!! I might have terrible taste in music.

  • New beginnings / Instrumental - Some of my favorite songs of all time are instrumental songs from movies. I hesitated to pick them though because if people haven’t seen the movie, I’m afraid some of the magic of the song can’t be fully appreciated. A good soundtrack enhances and connects what you are seeing on the screen. I haven’t seen this movie, but the song sounds good, so I’ll have to check it out. “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” by Ryuichi Sakamoto from the soundtrack of the movie with the same name is my favorite btw. Curious what everyone would think of it!

  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Storytime! - Didn't know this song, so thank you for submitting. Very strong expressive delivery of a story full of great imagery and dramatic irony. The music is clearly the supporting cast, helping the dramatic escalation. I enjoyed listening to it.

The music however is very non-expressive for me, with very little tonal nuance and no development. So maybe that's just a way to focus the listener on the story, but also there I found it too literal for and ambiguous story.

It has a nice and powerful hook, but that's pretty much the whole song. Just too repetitive to enjoy it past the first 30 seconds (those first 30 seconds I really enjoyed)

The only nitpick for me would be that the harmonics are fairly straightforward. Yes, this holds it together, but it could have done that with less straightforward harmonics as well. But lush and great harmonics. The explicit part adds something, although not too much
