New beginnings

  • The Imitation GameAlexandre Desplat, London Symphony Orchestra - Instrumental - #2 - 13 points - I could have chosen any of the immense collection of amazing classical music out there. But as much as I love certain classical composers, I have a soft spot for film composers. One of my favorites is Alexandre Desplat, who composed music for (among others) The King's Speech and The Shape of Water, and this movie. I chose this one because it has a great repeating rhythm and is still different at each repetition. Also, my sincere apologies to Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Christophe Beck, Rachel Portman, Howard Shore, and so many others. You are all amazing. I wish I could pick all of you. If you have time listen to Ripples in the Sand, which was my first choice but has vocalization in it.
  • 15 Miljoen MensenFluitsma & van Tijn - This isn't me - #1 - 19 points - Okay, for all the Americans in this group, this might be hard to understand, but... we in the Netherlands are totally unpatriottic. It is considered a little bougie (in the bad sense of the word) to be all "Holland, Holland" with the exception of national football, the Olympics, and King's Day. Other than that Dutch flags are only flying where there are a lot of tourists (just to make sure they know they're not in Denmark), on national holidays related to the royals or WWII, or when teens graduate from high school. We always look to the American outpurings of national pride with a raised eyebrow and a high level of eye rolling. But, when this song about our country and its little quirks came out, it was immediately immensely popular and is still very sentimental to most Dutch, including me. I don't usually like this type of music (Dutch folk singers) but I make an exception for this one. It was our American sentimentalism moment. Roll your eyes if you want. 😉
  • Wake Up, Mr. CrowSwitchfoot - Rediscovered - #2 - 12 points - In the early 2000s I was a big fan of this band, but sort of fell out of love with them. Their latest single is another anthem, though. Makes me want to go back to their old stuff and give it another listen.

  • New beginnings / Rediscovered - Sorry, I can't move. Also a catchy song, I love the smoothness of his melodies but I do tire of them very quickly.
  • New beginnings / This isn't me - I think I prefer the unplugged version, but that may just be because I heard it more.
  • New beginnings / Instrumental - Laufey has such incredible musical interludes on all her albums, it seems. I already enjoyed Nocturne (would recommend a listen) but this one is also beautiful.

  • New beginnings / Rediscovered - Started off great, a little iffy in the middle. But I approve. 😉
  • New beginnings / This isn't me - I love these lyrics. The melody isn't very interesting, a little boring even, but I really connect to what they're singing.
  • New beginnings / Instrumental - YES SOMEONE DID ENNIO MORRICONE! You absolute star! One of the best film composers. Not my favorite, personally (that would be Hans Zimmer, to no one's surprise), but a legend nonetheless. His compositions are even taught in universities.

  • New beginnings / Rediscovered - Seriously, they are still making music? That is amazing.
  • New beginnings / This isn't me - Her voice is stunning. This is what I always hope I sound like when I sing in the shower. I'm so glad this kind of vocalist still exists, and sort of came back after being out of vogue for half a century. Raye is another one in this vein.
  • New beginnings / Instrumental - We are in a somewhat metal-oriented group, it seems! This is more my style when it comes to metal. More like the symphonic metal I used to listen to as a teenager, such as The Gathering and Paradise Lost.

  • New beginnings / Rediscovered - Catchy, but I wish someone would make a version with lyrics like "tonight, Imma fight for control of the remote, then binge watch something nonsensical on Netflix and reread my favorite book with a Toblero-oh-oh-ohne". I feel zero connection to the content of this song.
  • New beginnings / This isn't me - I remember this one. It's somewhere in my Spotify favorites, but it's been a while.
  • New beginnings / Instrumental - Quentin Tarantino vibes... and a cheesy fade-out. Yeah. Fun! No points from me, but I like it.

  • New beginnings / Rediscovered - Another "are they still here?" artist. Okay.
  • New beginnings / This isn't me - The storytelling in this is amazing. Not a big country fan either, but the whole "momma whoring out her daughter" makes for great drama.
  • New beginnings / Instrumental - This is what would be playing underneath a John Wick fight scene or something. No points from me, but a plus for it being completely different than anything I would have expected on this list.

  • New beginnings / This isn't me - Very catchy.
  • New beginnings / Instrumental - I love the absolute craziness of this song. The idea that someone would think to do a Super Mario Praise Break is just hilarious to me. And even weirder is the fact that it actually is working: it is both video game music and praise break. Let's go!

  • New beginnings / This isn't me - Daring pick and I can very much relate to not listening to this type of music ;) And on top of that, I also can't deny that I like this song.

  • New beginnings / Rediscovered - Listening to this just made me want to listen to Dare You to Move again, rewatch A Walk to Remember, and forget that it's not 2002 anymore.
  • New beginnings / This isn't me - ... with the exception of King's day :) and, for what it's worth, plenty of Americans are very much NOT into that "put a boot in your ass" patriotism that somehow misses the entire point of our Constitution and our foundations as a secular nation of immigrants

  • New beginnings / Instrumental - Some of my favorite songs of all time are instrumental songs from movies. I hesitated to pick them though because if people haven’t seen the movie, I’m afraid some of the magic of the song can’t be fully appreciated. A good soundtrack enhances and connects what you are seeing on the screen. I haven’t seen this movie, but the song sounds good, so I’ll have to check it out. “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” by Ryuichi Sakamoto from the soundtrack of the movie with the same name is my favorite btw. Curious what everyone would think of it!

  • New beginnings / Rediscovered - the 2000s had a lot of neat christian-rock-adjacent bands, didn't it? this one didn't hit me but i played the crap out of Meant to Live way back then...
  • New beginnings / This isn't me - I know how you feel! I felt this way about the US before I left to live overseas - patriotism is a blunt identity hammer there sometimes rather than a love of actual principles or values - but I do like apple pie, and gravy on stuffing, etc

  • New beginnings / This isn't me - That it was a song accompanying a beer commercial in the movie theaters and on television didn't hurt it's popularity either... ;)
