New beginnings

  • Super Mario Praise BreakThe 8-Bit Big Band - Instrumental - #3 - 11 points - It has Big band, it has Jazz, gospel AND it has Mario? And all of that in this ridiculously ambitious arrangement and a performance that has the energy levels off the charts! I can’t stop listening. Whenever my daughter hears it, she doesn’t just dance, she sprints laps through the living room, like that’s the only way to match what this song is doing.
  • EspressoSabrina Carpenter - This isn't me - #7 - 8 points - Most pop tastes a bit too bland to me — like lemonade without enough syrup or a sandwich with just one slice of cheese. But this one? I can’t help but vibe with it.

Fun with Friends Near and Far!

  • Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)Frank Sinatra, Count Basie - Short and Sweet (or not) - #2 - 8 points - Great chord progression on this one, so simple and effective. And it has a lot of staying power. In other words, I love it
  • Carol of the Bells (From "Home Alone" Soundtrack)John Williams - Short and Sweet (or not) - #3 - 7 points - A classic, it's christmas, it's home alone, it's short, what more would you want?
  • The Ghost in Me - Danse Macabre -Epica, Efteling - Kids songs - #4 - 6 points - A cover made to celebrate a new ride in the Efteling. It's heavily inspired by the masterpiece that is Danse Macabre, by Saint-Saëns. Everyone in our family loves both the song and the ride :)
  • FinaleHarmonious World Ensemble - Kids songs - #6 - 4 points - The finale of Harmonious, the nighttime spectacular that only played for a year and a half at EPCOT before being replaced unexpectedly. But that doesn't keep us from enjoying this overproduced, anthem-style finale
  • LifeLouis Cole, Metropole Orkest, Jules Buckley - Excellently Explicit - #6 - 4 points - Yes, I admit, this song can be a lot to listen to. But that's just because there is so much in there. It once again shows Louis' ambition to stay away from formulaic songs and creates a creative and demanding song. I've had the pleasure to listen to this song live, and yes, they are stellar musicians.
  • AlrightKendrick Lamar - Excellently Explicit - #6 - 4 points - A perfect blend of hope and suffering. A song that had a big impact politically, but is also just a great song. You simply can't sit still while listening to this. Fun fact, it featured on Barack Obama's annual favorite-music list
  • Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op.125 'Choral': Ode to JoyWestminster Choir, Philadelphia Orchestra, Riccardo Muti, James Morris - Out of the ordinary - #2 - 7 points - Beethoven’s Ode to Joy is a rebellion against the symphonic rules of his day and inventing a new genre. Known for his independence and being a rebel, Beethoven basically did what he wanted and ignored that symphonies must be purely instrumental. Instead, he unleashed a full choir and soloists in the finale — shocking audiences and giving critics a hard time describing what they witnessed. By daring to fuse philosophy, vocals, and music into one triumphant finale, he didn’t just break the rules — he rewrote the playbook for generations, proving that a symphony could think, feel, and inspire.
  • El ViajeroLuis Miguel - Out of the ordinary - #4 - 5 points - Luis Miguel was up to this point mainly known for his Latin Pop and Boleros, but having grown up listening a lot to Mariachi, he decides to pay homage to the genre by creating this album, being a big departure from his normal work. Together with Vargas de Tecalitlán, the best Mariachi ensemble in the world, he went ahead and recorded this Grammy winning album.
  • A Boy Named Sue - Live at San Quentin State Prison, San Quentin, CA - February 1969Johnny Cash - Storytime! - #3 - 7 points - Simple enough, but I really like this song. Recorded in a prison with inmates as the audience, and actually written by Shel Silverstein why had an actual male friend who was named Sue.
  • Het juiste padYentl en de Boer - Storytime! - #2 - 8 points - A song about making impossible decisions. And as a parent, I find it impossible to listen to this song without feeling the difficulty of these.

  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Storytime! - Raw, gripping and honest. This indeed very much describes and makes you feel the sufferings of someone suffering from depression or psychosis. However, some form of this dialog is present in everyone. There is a lot of emotion in his delivery, and the simple guitar does a great job in supporting this great portrayal. Didn't know this song, so thank you for submitting.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Storytime! - A classic in storytelling and a great illustration of obsessive fans. For me, It lacks development musically to underpin the escalation in the story. but that's likely a stylistic choice. The delivery and flow however is unmatched. A great song.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Out of the ordinary - I'm conflicted on this one. It's great vocal and orchestral performance, and it's an emotional song. Sure, after the first crescendo, the rest of the song is a bit too predictable for my taste, but on paper, I should have really enjoyed listening to it, but instead I didn't feel too much either way. Maybe it was because I felt his voice lost its emotional power when the song started to develop in intensity.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Out of the ordinary - Two Ozzy ballets? Come on... we can do better than that. A nice ballet nonetheless, and for me, one of his better songs. It's very warm with great timbre with an iconic bridge. But it also lacks for me the vocal performance and virtuosity to really deliver an emotional message. The melody is enjoyable, but the fairly straightforward harmonics and standard rhythm keep it from being an excellent song for me.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Excellently Explicit - Culturally, a big impart on artistic freedom. The message is clear, and it has a good hook, but besides that there isn't much there for me. The lyrics aren't even that bad, but the delivery is horrible.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Excellently Explicit - As always, powerful vocals, yeah... it's a clear message, but very one dimensional. Also, the song is formulaic with little to no development.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Kids songs - Cute, small and wholesome. What else do you want in a kids song.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Kids songs - Some parts work reaaaally well in this version, but other parts just take me out of the spell.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Short and Sweet (or not) - Cute, more songs should be like this. A simple concept, worth 30 seconds and simply don't repeat 5 times
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Short and Sweet (or not) - warm, vulnerable and honest.

  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Storytime! - Didn't know this song, so thank you for submitting. Very strong expressive delivery of a story full of great imagery and dramatic irony. The music is clearly the supporting cast, helping the dramatic escalation. I enjoyed listening to it.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Storytime! - Didn't know this song from New Order, so thank you for submitting. The music however is very non-expressive for me, with very little tonal nuance and no development. So maybe that's just a way to focus the listener on the story, but also there I found it too literal for and ambiguous story.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Out of the ordinary - Yes, she did capture the psychedelic groovy 60's vibe, but It doesn't feel like a big departure from her other work for me. It has a nice and powerful hook, but that's pretty much the whole song. Just too repetitive to enjoy it past the first 30 seconds (those first 30 seconds I really enjoyed)
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Out of the ordinary - Two Ozzy ballets? Come on... we can do better than that. But unlike in the other one, there isn't much here for me. Literal lyrics, repetitive harmonics and structure with a weak melody. Also, for me, it doesn't feel cohesive.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Excellently Explicit - Wow.... what a mashup, different styles, different genres, different languages, and somehow they made it into a coherent song. So creative! The only nitpick for me would be that the harmonics are fairly straightforward. Yes, this holds it together, but it could have done that with less straightforward harmonics as well. But lush and great harmonics. The explicit part adds something, although not too much
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Excellently Explicit - Nice syncopation with some breathy vocals for a hypnotic vibe. The form is very conventional, which I felt held back the song a lot. I really liked the start, but in the end, there was too little in there for me to really get into it.
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Kids songs - Beautiful! Funnily enough, I never listened to this as a kid, but I absolutely love it without any nostalgia. Must be good then ;)
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Kids songs - Fun song, but cult of the new. And two KPDH songs?
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Short and Sweet (or not) - I like this song, but the recording felt of to me. Maybe with another version it would have gotten a point
  • Fun with Friends Near and Far! / Short and Sweet (or not) - It worked fine, but didn't add anything to the song for me. Always fun trying these kind of cross-overs
  • New beginnings / This isn't me - Flamenco/Latin Pop ;) But how is this a (type of) song you don't commonly listen to? I really like this song, but can't give any points :(

  • New beginnings / This isn't me - Daring pick and I can very much relate to not listening to this type of music ;) And on top of that, I also can't deny that I like this song.

  • New beginnings / This isn't me - Very catchy.
  • New beginnings / Instrumental - I love the absolute craziness of this song. The idea that someone would think to do a Super Mario Praise Break is just hilarious to me. And even weirder is the fact that it actually is working: it is both video game music and praise break. Let's go!
