New beginnings
- Super Mario Praise BreakThe 8-Bit Big Band - Instrumental - #3 - 11 points - It has Big band, it has Jazz, gospel AND it has Mario? And all of that in this ridiculously ambitious arrangement and a performance that has the energy levels off the charts! I can’t stop listening. Whenever my daughter hears it, she doesn’t just dance, she sprints laps through the living room, like that’s the only way to match what this song is doing.
- EspressoSabrina Carpenter - This isn't me - #7 - 8 points - Most pop tastes a bit too bland to me — like lemonade without enough syrup or a sandwich with just one slice of cheese. But this one? I can’t help but vibe with it.
Fun with Friends Near and Far!
- Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)Frank Sinatra, Count Basie - Short and Sweet (or not) - #2 - 8 points - Great chord progression on this one, so simple and effective. And it has a lot of staying power. In other words, I love it
- Carol of the Bells (From "Home Alone" Soundtrack)John Williams - Short and Sweet (or not) - #3 - 7 points - A classic, it's christmas, it's home alone, it's short, what more would you want?
- The Ghost in Me - Danse Macabre -Epica, Efteling - Kids songs - #4 - 6 points - A cover made to celebrate a new ride in the Efteling. It's heavily inspired by the masterpiece that is Danse Macabre, by Saint-Saëns. Everyone in our family loves both the song and the ride :)
- FinaleHarmonious World Ensemble - Kids songs - #6 - 4 points - The finale of Harmonious, the nighttime spectacular that only played for a year and a half at EPCOT before being replaced unexpectedly. But that doesn't keep us from enjoying this overproduced, anthem-style finale
- LifeLouis Cole, Metropole Orkest, Jules Buckley - Excellently Explicit - #6 - 4 points - Yes, I admit, this song can be a lot to listen to. But that's just because there is so much in there. It once again shows Louis' ambition to stay away from formulaic songs and creates a creative and demanding song. I've had the pleasure to listen to this song live, and yes, they are stellar musicians.
- AlrightKendrick Lamar - Excellently Explicit - #6 - 4 points - A perfect blend of hope and suffering. A song that had a big impact politically, but is also just a great song. You simply can't sit still while listening to this. Fun fact, it featured on Barack Obama's annual favorite-music list
- Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op.125 'Choral': Ode to JoyWestminster Choir, Philadelphia Orchestra, Riccardo Muti, James Morris - Out of the ordinary - #2 - 7 points - Beethoven’s Ode to Joy is a rebellion against the symphonic rules of his day and inventing a new genre. Known for his independence and being a rebel, Beethoven basically did what he wanted and ignored that symphonies must be purely instrumental. Instead, he unleashed a full choir and soloists in the finale — shocking audiences and giving critics a hard time describing what they witnessed. By daring to fuse philosophy, vocals, and music into one triumphant finale, he didn’t just break the rules — he rewrote the playbook for generations, proving that a symphony could think, feel, and inspire.
- El ViajeroLuis Miguel - Out of the ordinary - #4 - 5 points - Luis Miguel was up to this point mainly known for his Latin Pop and Boleros, but having grown up listening a lot to Mariachi, he decides to pay homage to the genre by creating this album, being a big departure from his normal work. Together with Vargas de Tecalitlán, the best Mariachi ensemble in the world, he went ahead and recorded this Grammy winning album.
- A Boy Named Sue - Live at San Quentin State Prison, San Quentin, CA - February 1969Johnny Cash - Storytime! - #3 - 7 points - Simple enough, but I really like this song. Recorded in a prison with inmates as the audience, and actually written by Shel Silverstein why had an actual male friend who was named Sue.
- Het juiste padYentl en de Boer - Storytime! - #2 - 8 points - A song about making impossible decisions. And as a parent, I find it impossible to listen to this song without feeling the difficulty of these.
