  • This isn't meOriginEs - #1 - 19 points - submitted Apr 11, 2026 - Okay, for all the Americans in this group, this might be hard to understand, but... we in the Netherlands are totally unpatriottic. It is considered a little bougie (in the bad sense of the word) to be all "Holland, Holland" with the exception of national football, the Olympics, and King's Day. Other than that Dutch flags are only flying where there are a lot of tourists (just to make sure they know they're not in Denmark), on national holidays related to the royals or WWII, or when teens graduate from high school. We always look to the American outpurings of national pride with a raised eyebrow and a high level of eye rolling. But, when this song about our country and its little quirks came out, it was immediately immensely popular and is still very sentimental to most Dutch, including me. I don't usually like this type of music (Dutch folk singers) but I make an exception for this one. It was our American sentimentalism moment. Roll your eyes if you want. 😉
