So what if it's a little noisy.... It's X Japan! The guitar solo is played by "hide" (rest in peace) - must tribute him as it would've been his birthday soon (13 dec).

Dragon force is my jam. This may have been the first song I heard and it's just so dang HAPPY. Not your typical metal and half the song is guitar solos!

Yes! More Deep Purple! Everyone knows this one! Might not be the most popular, but the riff is excellent (and super easy to play haha)

I heard that the majority of us might not really "get" guitar music. So I'm staying conservative with songs. Rock 001A: Riffs/Rhythm guitar Unlike other genres, rock emphasizes a lot of texture chords on top of, but following, the bass&drums. That's the role of riffs and/or rhythm guitars: chords to get your head nodding ("Zombie") or be a sweet groove to come home to ("Layla") A lot to say about this song, but basically this guitar lick is unforgettable and instantly makes people happy.

Probably an offbeat pick for this round deserving of any downvotes, but I just like how the opening riff sets the atmospheric tone for the song. It’s used sparingly throughout, but parallels and complements Chris Issac’s vocals on the chorus beautifully.

This came out when I was about 13 (around the time I met Mike!) and, like for many others, it became an essential song of the soundtrack for my 90s teen angst. You’ve never heard of a wonderwall, but achingly longed for it. This song was so overplayed, I took a break from it for a decade or two, but those same emotions of longing still wash over upon hearing the opening riff.

I like how this round is not lyric dependent. So you guys can get exposed to some Japanese guitarists. Sugizo is an awesome guitarist!

Mansplain Rock 001B: Solos/Lead guitar The lead guitar, unlike rhythm guitar, is meant to contrast with other instruments/take the song new places. Usually through a solo, but also thru call-and-response melody. I don't care much about how fast a lead guitarist can play, but about how expressive and dynamically they choose to play - Santana's guitar sings for him! In music nerd friend league, I won the guitar solo round with this song. The biggest nerd said using Santana was like cheating.
