Music Through the Decades

The Singularity

  • Wynona's Big Brown BeaverPrimus - Irreplaceable - #2 - 6 points - AI prompt: write me a song about a sexual euphemism, that might also just be a literal woodland animal, flanked with schizophrenic, hillbilly rock energy…
  • Eyes Without A FaceBilly Idol - Irreplaceable - #5 - 3 points - Billy’s sexy punk rocker vibe would be challenging to replicate. And then there’s the song title: would AI comprehend the lyrics referring to infidelity and the moral decay of society? Or write a literal song about faceless eyeballs?
  • Never Gonna Give You UpRick Astley - This is Fine - #3 - 4 points - The machines could never give us up.
  • What The Heck? (From "Earthworm Jim") - OriginalTallarico - This is Fine - #2 - 5 points - This 16-bit biddy comes from Earthworm Jim, a Sega Genesis classic from 1994. It stars an ordinary worm that finds a super suit and gains its powers. This song comes from a level where Jim goes to Hell (hence the intermittent screaming). There he battles demons, lawyers and the devil, who turns out to be a cat (of course). For the purpose of this prompt, the machine overlords begin our bedtime song with a sinister tune, Night on Bald Mountain, intending to give us nightmares. But then they realize, “Hey, maybe we should keep the humans calm and happy…to prevent any chance of a revolution.” So they abruptly stop the record, scramble for a replacement, and begin playing cheesy elevator music.
  • KashmirLondon Philharmonic Orchestra, Peter Scholes - John Henry - #5 - 3 points - This song translates epically into a symphony.
  • I Have NothingWhitney Houston - John Henry - #2 - 7 points - You can’t deny Whitney’s talent and amazing vocal range.
  • Language I: IntuitionThe Contortionist - Embiggened Language Model - #3 - 5 points - Thought provoking. Meditative. Metal?
  • Rosetta StonedTOOL - Embiggened Language Model - #2 - 6 points - Hold on to your butts. Lead singer Maynard bombards the chatbots with a flood of nonsense? Or is it a codex to defeat our overlords? For added insanity and a little context, first listen to Lost Keys (the track prior)
  • Jump - 2015 RemasterVan Halen - Man vs Machine - #2 - 7 points - A transitional song and album for VH, not only in its members (this being Roth’s last with the band) but also in sound, incorporating the keyboard & synthesizer. I mean, who doesn’t love a keyboard solo?? For added fun, first play the intro track “1984” before this.
  • Panama - 2015 RemasterVan Halen - Man vs Machine - #7 - 1 points - Raw, old school VH, ironically the next track after Jump.

Into the Void

Beginnings

Hey DJ!

  • FaithLimp Bizkit - Cover Me Badly - #4 - 10 points
  • Darling NikkiPrince - $@#?! - #8 - 5 points - Parental Advisory: Explicit Content. This song is the reason such labels were created. But nowadays I feel like we should be more open about the topics mentioned in this song.
  • (What A) Wonderful WorldSam Cooke - The Big Ask - #5 - 8 points - I would be in disguise at the school cafeteria lunch line, probably serving navy beans and sloppy joes. When the prom target arrives at my station, I serve them a dish with a message “U + ME 2 PROM?” spelled out using the beans. Then i remove my hairnet, fake mustache & mole
  • O・TA・KUラブリー伝説花冷え。 - Tongue Twists - #9 - 5 points - Destroy us wonderfully! I saw these ladies live a few years ago and they blew me away
  • I Like ItEnrique Iglesias, Pitbull - Guilty Pleasures - #4 - 8 points - Close all the car windows first. Then crank it up!

  • Sacramen-toeJam / Haven't seen you in a while - I don't like Sinatra that much, but I like giving points to songs that stand out as different or add to the variety of the playlist.
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Haven't seen you in a while - I'm calling J on this one. Tell Mama you're taking home a bunch of points! I hate Ozzy's Spotify bio and his general attitude, but this is a damn good ballad.
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Back in time - An inspired choice! I think Pooh got stuck in the hunny jar while footloose in the Danger Zone.
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Back in time - Glad to be reminded of this song. Used to listen to REM a lot with my sisters.
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Horn-y - I'm conflicted on this one. In terms of composition and production, it hasn't aged well in the TikTok era - except for around the verse "because my love for you..." *chefs kiss*. But that verse/prechorus is pretty awesome and I'd like more risk-taking Bowie-type songs in the league. Bowie definitely had sex listening to this song on repeat
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Horn-y - My first thought was that this was an advertisement because I'm using the free tier. My second thought was no, it just sounds a lot like an ad. My third thought was oh, the Artist Bio actually says, "we got started by making ads". Aside from that, it's a neat song that happens to sometimes be used as an ad. This song, Kill This Love, and Close to Me have the best use of horns within a non-horn song. And it's a short song, which is a plus.
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Next! - One of the songs I enjoy most this round, but not quite on-topic enough / personal favorite enough to get that 2nd point in a strong field.
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Next! - This is my "I just can't get into this" song for the round, but I started to appreciate it a bit more after repeated listens.

  • Sacramen-toeJam / Back in time - Thought this was a good song pick. One of my favorite Sofia memories ever was when she received Pooh for her 2nd birthday and was starstruck because she thought he was real and this song always reminds me of that time.
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Back in time - Got the downvote only because we have to pick one and I personally would have picked another song from this album for this round (Man on the Moon).
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Horn-y - I would have given this song 2 points if you picked the shorter version. Inspired choice tho!
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Horn-y - I was about to pick a Capital Cities song too!
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Next! - How this song relates to the theme, I don’t know, but *someone* must have known I love this song and will give it points.
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Next! - On regular rotation on my personal playlist so had to give this two points even though I think I know who submitted this song…

  • Sacramen-toeJam / Horn-y - Not bad.... *knod of acknowledgement*
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Horn-y - I really like this song! And I have no idea why. I just like it! Max points from me!
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Next! - I like the song, but I don't get how it fits the theme, except the 1 line, "night, night after day"... But I can't downvote because I like it.... So just... 0
  • Sacramen-toeJam / Next! - Not a fan of the song... I just can't groove with it. I'm sorry, I gotta downvote something.
