Music Through the Decades

Beginnings

  • A Praise ChorusJimmy Eat World, Davey Vonbohlen - If At First You Don't Succeed - #1 - 12 points - The third album from Jimmy Eat World made them a staple of the pop punk scene in the early 2000s with their single "The Middle". This is my favorite song off that album.
  • Dream OnAerosmith - Original - #3 - 11 points - Probably the first instance of sampling I could recall. Dream on was sampled by Eminem on his song "Song for the Moment"
  • Mr. Blue SkyElectric Light Orchestra - Summer Starts - #6 - 6 points
  • In the EndLinkin Park - Beginnings - #10 - 2 points - There can be no beginnings without an end...or maybe the beginning of the end? But does it even matter?
  • All These Things That I've DoneThe Killers - Debut - #4 - 11 points

Hey DJ!

  • Desolation RowMy Chemical Romance - Cover Me Badly - #10 - 2 points - I like My Chemical Romance, but this is the worst cover I've ever heard - turning an eleven minute folk masterpiece from Bob Dylan into a three minute pop punk song that completely misses the point.
  • Killing In The NameRage Against The Machine - $@#?! - #4 - 10 points
  • First Dateblink-182 - The Big Ask - #3 - 10 points
  • Miss SarajevoPassengers, Luciano Pavarotti - Tongue Twists - #7 - 7 points - U2 released this album under the pseudonym Passengers with this track on it featuring Pavarotti
  • Hollaback GirlGwen Stefani - Guilty Pleasures - #7 - 5 points - This song is more in the hate column than the love one, but I still find that bananas part really funny and catchy.

  • Hey DJ! / Guilty Pleasures - As an old millennial, Gwen Stefani will always hold a special place in my heart and I will never feel guilty admitting I love her music!
  • Hey DJ! / Tongue Twists - Really beautiful song; wish I submitted this one!
  • Hey DJ! / The Big Ask - Also a good pick and out of points 😓
  • Hey DJ! / Cover Me Badly - I’m not familiar enough with Dylan’s Desolation Row to recognize this is a bad cover and that is a failure on my part. I’ll listen to Dylan’s version a few times as penance.

  • Hey DJ! / Guilty Pleasures - I'm the biggest No Doubt fan of all time, but this song pisses me off. Representative of Gwen going, "I'm just going to do one quick dance album on my own then come back," and then turning into something completely different than she was before.

  • Hey DJ! / Guilty Pleasures - At first I was a bit annoyed that someone ignored the system warning and doubled up on picking Gwen, but there's not actually much overlap between the two songs, so I guess it worked out.
  • Hey DJ! / Tongue Twists - I saw the band name and was expecting some Stomp Clap Hey, so it was a pleasant surprise. Neat Wikipedia article about how this song got made.
  • Hey DJ! / $@#?! - good song but angrily screaming 'fuck you i won't do what you tell me' over and over is not fitting for this round. Not the only song on this list that does it, but I think it's the most egregious...
  • Hey DJ! / Cover Me Badly - I am NEVER going to listen to the original, so MCR's is the only version for me. I admit this makes me a bad guy. But I am a bad guy who won't have to listen to Dylan murder a microphone with vague poetry for an unreasonably long period of time. I'm not the only one thinking this, I'm just the only one being honest. To be clear, I'm not THAT opposed to him or his music in general, but I gave up while reading the lyrics on this one, oof.
